Think of a colossal clock. That’s Die Pyramide for you. This high-rise building pierces the Berlin skyline. Die Pyramide stands tall in the Marzahn district. It rises at the intersection of Rhinstraße and Landsberger Allee.
Completed in 1995, Die Pyramide is more than just an office building. It’s a statement. The Fundus-Gruppe, a real estate company, invested about €145 million into this project. At 100 meters high, Die Pyramide is the tallest building in the area.
Die Pyramide features a striking architectural design. The 23-floor building incorporates a pyramid-like glass facade. This pyramid is not just for show. It functions as a giant clock. Green light strips on the west face display the hour and minute. Blue lights on the north facade count the seconds. Each second adds another light to the display. A flash of light from the tip marks each minute. For a time, Die Pyramide even held the title of Europe’s largest clock.
However, the clock hasn’t always been in service. It was off from early 2006 to December 2007. It has been out of order again since early 2009.
The Fundus-Gruppe used a real estate fund to finance Die Pyramide. Rental income, however, didn’t meet expectations. Investors accused the Fundus-Gruppe of misrepresentation. They claimed the rentable space was smaller than advertised. The Fundus-Gruppe denied these claims.
In 2006, the Comer Group International bought Die Pyramide. The British company established its European headquarters here. They occupy about a third of the building. A business hotel with 70 rooms occupies two floors of an adjacent building.
Die Pyramide also houses a cultural exhibition center. It is maintained by the Marzahn-Hellersdorf district government. This center hosts various cultural events. Die Pyramide isn’t just offices. It is a hub for community engagement.
Interestingly, Die Pyramide even starred in a Rammstein music video. The band members played firefighters in the video for “Benzin.” The video features a man jumping from Die Pyramide.
