“Lost in a book?” a voice startled me. I looked up from the worn copy of “Moby Dick” I’d been engrossed in. I was sitting at one of the many study tables in the Purdy/Kresge Library, completely absorbed in the world of Captain Ahab. This architectural marvel, a prominent feature on Wayne State University’s campus, had a palpable energy that both invigorated and soothed. The Purdy/Kresge Library began as two separate structures. The Kresge Library, funded by The Kresge Foundation, was initially intended as a science library. Simultaneously, Dr. G. Flint Purdy, the University Librarian, had plans for a general library. Their combined vision led to the construction of two interconnected libraries, opening in the early 1950s. The original design, a collaboration between architects Suren Pilafian and Francesco Montana, showcases a distinct Bauhaus Modern style. The buildings feature clean lines, planes, and a thoughtful interplay of solids and voids. Pink Mansota stone, gray brick, and aluminum create a visually striking exterior, complemented by greenstone spandrels and polished emerald pearl Swedish granite columns at the entrance. The library’s large glass windows, a signature element of Pilafian’s designs, flood the interior with natural light. Wide stone overhangs, a unique feature, shade the interior from the summer sun while also facilitating cleaning. Inside, the Purdy/Kresge Library offers a traditional atmosphere. The aroma of old books mingled with the quiet hum of computers. Over 60 computers, ample study space, and a vast print collection provide a haven for students and researchers. The library’s history is intertwined with Dr. Purdy’s legacy. He envisioned a space where students, faculty, and the community could access a wealth of knowledge. The Purdy building houses special collections like the Ramsey Collection of Children’s Literature and the Office for Teaching and Learning. The Kresge building includes faculty offices and study rooms. Both buildings were ingeniously designed with no load-bearing walls, allowing for flexible rearrangement of the interior space. So, the next time you find yourself at the Purdy/Kresge Library, take a moment to appreciate its unique history. From its dual origins to its innovative design, this library stands as a testament to the power of vision and collaboration. It’s more than just a library; it’s a living, breathing hub of knowledge and a quiet haven in the heart of Detroit.
