Five thousand years whisper from these stones. Welcome to Purana Qila the Old Fort. This isn’t just a fort. It’s a living testament to Delhi’s layered history. Imagine Indraprastha the ancient city of the Mahabharata rising here. Then Humayun the Mughal emperor envisioned Dinpanah a city of refuge. His ambition however was cut short by fate. He died before Dinpanah could reach its full glory.

Sher Shah Suri a powerful Afghan king seized the opportunity. He completed the fort enhancing its defenses and architecture. Notice the blend of Mughal and Afghan styles. It’s a unique fusion reflecting the fort’s turbulent past. The massive walls twenty meters high four meters thick are a testament to its strategic importance.

Within the walls lies Qila-i-Kuhna Mosque a masterpiece of medieval architecture. Its red and yellow sandstone intricate carvings and stunning archways showcase the architectural skills of the time. Don’t miss the Sher Mandal a two-story octagonal structure. Initially a pleasure retreat it was later used as a library by Humayun. Tragically it was also the site of his fatal fall.

The Hamam the ancient bathhouse is a reminder of a time when relaxation and administration went hand in hand. It’s a fascinating glimpse into the daily life of those who once lived within Purana Qila’s walls. Until 1913 a village Indrapat thrived inside the fort.

Archaeological discoveries have unearthed a treasure trove of artifacts. A rare 12th-century Vishnu sculpture and Gupta period terracotta seals provide evidence of earlier civilizations. The Purana Qila Museum showcases these finds offering a window into Delhi’s distant past.

Even today Purana Qila remains a vibrant place. The evening sound and light show brings Mughal history to life. You can even take a boat ride on the moat once home to crocodiles. This magnificent fort is a place where history breathes. Its walls hold secrets echoes of empires and the enduring spirit of Delhi.
