“This place has a different energy, don’t you think?” Punta de sa Pedrera, a place whispered about in hushed tones on this sun-drenched island. Here at Punta de sa Pedrera, the landscape takes on an otherworldly feel. It’s no surprise that locals and visitors alike have bestowed upon it another name: Atlantis. The story of Punta de sa Pedrera begins not in mythology, but in the pragmatic reality of construction. Centuries ago, this site was a sandstone quarry, providing the materials for some of Ibiza’s most iconic structures, including the walls of Dalt Vila. It’s fascinating to think that the very stones that built those historical landmarks were hewn from this very spot. The quarrymen left their mark in the form of deep cuts and irregular rock formations, creating a landscape unlike any other. Rainwater, drawn to the hollows carved out by the quarrymen, has formed pools of shimmering turquoise, reflecting the sky and creating a mesmerizing tapestry of colors. Punta de sa Pedrera, however, is more than just a geological wonder. In the 1960s, a new wave of inhabitants, drawn by the island’s allure, found refuge in its sculpted landscape – the hippies. They saw in the strange formations a reflection of their own free-spirited nature and dubbed it ‘Atlantis,’ a mythical world reborn. Look closely, and you might still find traces of their presence – carved figures in the rocks, small altars hidden amongst the stones – a silent testament to a time when peace and love reigned supreme.
