Was it a palace? That’s the question many historians ask about Pungnaptoseong. Right here before you stands a fascinating piece of Seoul’s history. Pungnaptoseong is an earthen fortification. It’s located near the Han River in Pungnap-dong. Imagine the lives of people who lived here centuries ago.

Pungnaptoseong’s history stretches back to the Baekje kingdom. Some believe it was Hanam Wiryeseong the kingdom’s first capital. Its oval shape stretches north to south. It leans slightly east. Originally its circumference was four kilometers. Flooding in 1925 tragically destroyed much of it. Only 2.7 kilometers remain today.

Archaeological discoveries support Pungnaptoseong’s significance. In 2008 archaeologists unearthed 1500-year-old storage jars. They found a celadon bowl from mid-5th century China. These artifacts reveal clues about daily life within the fortress walls. They show evidence of a prosperous community. The fortress played a vital role in the Baekje kingdom.

The inner wall is mainly sandy soil grit clayish and muddy soil. Pebbles and trimmed stones were layered on top. The base is seven meters wide and five meters high. These details illustrate meticulous construction. It shows the advanced engineering of its time. Pungnaptoseong was not just a fortification. It was a center of activity and life.
