Did you know that the Pumpwerk Tegel once supplied water to a prison? The Pumpwerk Tegel stands before you a silent witness to Tegel’s history. It’s more than just a water pumping station. It’s a vital piece of Berlin’s infrastructure. Built in 1898 it originally served a smaller population. Engineer Emil Prinz designed this impressive structure. The Pumpwerk Tegel included a main building. Six wells drew raw water. An iron removal plant stood as a low round tower. A 30-meter-tall water tower held 400 cubic meters of purified water. This water flowed under pressure to local residents. The prison was one of the early customers. As Tegel grew the Pumpwerk Tegel needed expansion. By 1902 more work was necessary. In 1907 and 1908 they enlarged the engine room. Ten additional wells were added in 1912. Another iron removal tower was constructed. The Pumpwerk Tegel could then serve 16000 people. By 1914 the Pumpwerk Tegel turned a profit of 18400 Marks. The Pumpwerk Tegel quietly and efficiently served the community for decades. It is a testament to careful planning and engineering. It’s a fascinating reminder of how Berlin has grown and developed. Today the Pumpwerk Tegel continues its vital work. It remains a key part of Berlin’s water system. It quietly continues its important task in the heart of Tegel. The Pumpwerk Tegel is more than just a pump it’s a symbol of Tegel’s enduring spirit.
