Did you know that a peaceful garden lies hidden within Juniper Valley Park? This is Pullis Farm Cemetery Historical Landmark. It stands as a tribute to the Pullis pioneer family of Middle Village. Let’s uncover the story of this tranquil place.

The Pullis Farm Cemetery Historical Landmark is more than just a burial ground. It is a reminder of the early American farm life in Queens. Thomas Pullis Sr. purchased a 32-acre farm here in 1822. In 1846, the cemetery was created. It became the final resting place for Pullis family members.

Back then, it was common for homeowners to bury loved ones on their own land. As Manhattan banned burials in 1851, families created private burial grounds. The Pullis Farm Cemetery Historical Landmark is one of the few surviving examples of these family plots. Many others disappeared as farms were divided and streets were built.

According to records from 1932, the Pullis family cemetery once held five to seven graves. Over time, headstones went missing or were broken. The only name clearly identifiable was that of Thomas Pullis Sr. who died in 1854. The site was overgrown, and marble tombstones were torn out.

Thomas Pullis Sr. made sure his family burial plot would be preserved. In his will, he instructed that the cemetery should never be sold. He even provided funds to build a brick wall around it. This was to protect it for generations to come. He bequeathed his farm to his three sons. They were Thomas Jr., James H. and Washington.

Middle Village got its name in the 1850s. It was halfway between Williamsburgh and Jamaica. Farmers like Pullis would travel to market. Pullis took his produce to the ferry landing on Newtown Creek. He then ferried to Catherine Market in Manhattan. On the way, he would often stop at Niederstein’s Restaurant.

In the 1990s, the Pullis Farm Cemetery Historical Landmark had fallen into disrepair. Ed Shusterich, founded the Pullis Farm Cemetery Historical Landmark. He led efforts to restore it. Thanks to his work, a memorial and a fence were built around the cemetery plot. Much of Juniper Valley Park was once part of the Pullis farm.

The Pullis landmark has transformed this area into a beautiful green space. It is a place where people of all ages can come together. The park’s renovation project addresses landmarks, landscaping, lighting, walkways and greenery. It ensures that this historical site remains a treasure for all to enjoy.

Today, the Pullis Farm Cemetery Historical Landmark stands as a testament to the Pullis family. It also honors the history of Middle Village. Take a moment to appreciate this peaceful garden. Remember the Pullis family. Remember the early days of Queens.
