Hidden within the undulating hills and sprawling bush of Brisbane lies Pullenvale, a suburb steeped in history and charming rural charm. The name itself, adopted around the 1870s, whispers tales of pioneers and their connection to the land, particularly Pullen Pullen Creek, which snakes its way through the valley. The creek’s name, a possible echo of an Aboriginal language, hints at stories of conflict or perhaps even a corroboree, a gathering of the Turrbal tribe who once called this land home.

Pullenvale was once a hub of timber logging, with early settlers seeking valuable hardwoods like hoop pine, red cedar, and rosewood. Imagine the bustling activity of logging camps, the echoes of saws and the creak of wagons, the scent of pine and the sounds of birdsong. As these trees dwindled, loggers turned to the scrub softwoods and eventually eucalypts, which were heavily logged until World War II. The majestic trees were then hauled down to Moggill Creek to be rafted down the Brisbane River. This process, requiring a precise timing of tides, created a fascinating ballet of nature and human ingenuity.

Pullenvale, however, evolved beyond its logging past. The land was gradually subdivided and auctioned, attracting farmers who settled and cultivated the rich soil. Pullenvale became a patchwork of small farms, where cattle roamed the rolling hills and pineapples flourished in the sun. The sweet aroma of pineapple farms lingered in the air, a testament to the area’s agricultural heritage. Most farms diversified their crops with corn, arrowroot, potatoes, and various vegetables, with cotton also being grown for a time. The farmers, with their vast knowledge of the terrain, became skilled horsemen, and many joined the Light Horse Battalion during World War I, a tribute to their horsemanship.

The Pullenvale landscape, a blend of rolling hills, lush bushland, and fertile land, still retains its historical charm. As you wander the quiet streets, the spirit of Pullenvale’s pioneering past lingers, a reminder of a time when the land was raw, but full of promise and opportunity.
