Here, where the Brunei River meets the Butir River, lies Pulau Sibungor. This small islet plays a surprisingly vital role. Let’s uncover the secrets of Pulau Sibungor together.

Pulau Sibungor is a small island. It is located in the Brunei-Muara District. The island sits southwest of Bandar Seri Begawan. This island is an important part of Brunei’s ecology. It also helps ships navigate the river.

The island is uninhabited. Pulau Sibungor is eight hectares. That equals about 20 acres. It is a safe place for the endangered proboscis monkey. Marshes surround Pulau Sibungor. Rhizophora apiculata mangroves grow here. These mangroves are important to the Brunei River ecosystem. They are breeding and nursery grounds for aquatic life. Pulau Lumut Lunting is a nearby island. It is much smaller, only one hectare.

Pulau Sibungor is a key landmark for ships. It is about five miles southwest of where the Brunei and Butir Rivers meet. Navigating here needs care. There are tidal whirls and eddies. Ships must pass west of the two beacons near the island. They must proceed with caution.

Back on April 8, 1958, an accident occurred near Pulau Sibungor. M.S.T. M.L. Eager and the Sarawak government launch Apoh collided. The Apoh was hit on its port side. It suffered serious damage above the waterline. Luckily, no passengers or crew were hurt.

Pulau Sibungor features mangroves. There was also a former feeling station on the island. You can still see it in older photos.

Pulau Sibungor is more than just a small island. It’s a vital part of Brunei’s river system. It supports wildlife. It guides ships. This small island has a significant role. It helps Brunei’s environment and its navigation.
