Whispers of Pul-e-Charkhi. That’s how it started for me. Before I ever saw the imposing walls of Afghanistan’s largest prison, I heard the whispers. Whispers of torture, of executions, of thousands lost within its concrete embrace. Pul-e-Charkhi Prison. A name synonymous with fear and suffering, etched into the very fabric of Kabul’s history. The prison’s construction began in the 1970s under President Daoud Khan, a project completed in the turbulent 1980s. It was initially intended to be a modern correctional facility. However, the Soviet-Afghan War transformed Pul-e-Charkhi into a symbol of oppression. It became a central site for political prisoners, many of whom were never seen again. Imagine the terror of those held within these walls during the communist era, the constant threat of violence hanging heavy in the air. Some estimate that nearly 27,000 political prisoners were executed at Pul-e-Charkhi between April 1978 and December 1979 alone, under the rule of Nur Muhammad Taraki. The discovery of a mass grave near the prison in 2006 offered a chilling glimpse into this dark period. This grave, thought to contain the remains of around 2,000 individuals, serves as a stark reminder of the atrocities committed within Pul-e-Charkhi’s walls. Even after the fall of the communist regime, the prison continued to be plagued by overcrowding, riots, and escapes. In 2006, a seemingly minor change in prison policy, requiring inmates to wear orange jumpsuits, sparked a riot that resulted in six deaths and numerous injuries. This riot underscored the volatile atmosphere within Pul-e-Charkhi, a place where even small changes could ignite tensions into violence. The United States later invested millions in renovating a wing of Pul-e-Charkhi, aiming to improve conditions. Ironically, cultural sensitivities among Afghan prisoners regarding toilet facilities halved the intended capacity of the renovated wing. Pul-e-Charkhi’s story took another dramatic turn in 2021. With the Taliban’s return to power, the prison’s gates were thrown open, releasing thousands of inmates. Among them were many Taliban members, some of whom returned to Pul-e-Charkhi not as prisoners, but as guards. Pul-e-Charkhi Prison. A place where history continues to unfold, leaving an indelible mark on Kabul’s landscape and the hearts of those who know its story.
