“Did you know Pui Ching Middle School Guangzhou has a song with a Dutch tune?” I invite you to discover the rich history of this famous school. Pui Ching Middle School is more than just a school. It is a Guangzhou landmark.

Founded in 1889, Pui Ching was special from the start. Local Chinese Baptists established it. It was the first Christian school in China founded by locals. This broke the mold of foreign missionaries leading the way. Its original location is right here in Yuexiu District. The campus spans nearly 70000 square meters. That is big enough for 36 senior grade classes and 26 junior grade classes.

For a time during World War II, Pui Ching Middle School moved to Macau. This was in January 1938. It was a direct result of the war spreading to Southern China. The Guangzhou school later reopened after the war.

The school song has an interesting story. Li Zhu-hou wrote the lyrics. He was a Chinese language teacher at Pui Ching Middle School. Ho An-tung arranged the music. Surprisingly, the melody is the same as “Wien Neêrlands Bloed.” That was once the national anthem of the Netherlands.

Pui Ching has a strong reputation. Many successful people are alumni. David K. Lam founded Lam Research Corporation. The school has produced leaders in many fields.

The school faced a challenge. Another school in Guangdong tried to use its name. Pui Ching fought back. They won a legal battle to protect their identity. The Beijing court ruled in Pui Ching’s favor. This protects the school’s reputation.

Pui Ching continues to educate students. It upholds its traditions. It is a place of history and learning. The Guangzhou Pui Ching Middle School stands as a testament to Chinese education. Its history is rich. Its future is bright.
