Across the serene Yongding River lies the Puhui Bridge, once known as Lugou Bridge or even Marco Polo Bridge. This remarkable granite structure, just 15 km southwest of Beijing’s bustling center, has witnessed centuries of history unfold. The Puhui Bridge, completed in 1192, was originally part of the main route into ancient Beijing. Venetian explorer Marco Polo himself marveled at its elegance in the 13th century, describing it as having “very few equals in the world.” His admiration solidified the bridge’s Western name as the “Marco Polo Bridge.” The Puhui Bridge stretches an impressive 266.5 meters, supported by eleven graceful arches and ten sturdy piers. Each pier is reinforced with triangular iron pillars, a testament to the ingenuity of its builders in protecting it against the ravages of floods and ice. But the true magic of the Puhui Bridge lies in its intricate stone lions. Over 500 of these unique sculptures adorn the bridge, each posing differently. Look closely, and you’ll discover even more miniature lions hiding on the larger ones, creating a delightful puzzle for the eye. No one knows the exact number, adding to the mystery and allure. Tragically, the Puhui Bridge also played a pivotal role in the 20th century. The Marco Polo Bridge Incident in 1937, a clash between Chinese and Japanese forces, marked the beginning of the Second Sino-Japanese War. Today, the bridge stands as a silent reminder of this conflict, a symbol of resilience and a testament to the enduring spirit of China. The Puhui Bridge isn’t just a bridge; it’s a living story etched in stone, a place where history and art intertwine, inviting us to reflect on the past and appreciate the enduring beauty of human creation.
