Leaning giants. That’s what they look like, don’t they? These are the Puerta de Europa towers. They’re also known as the KIO Towers, a nickname from their original commissioners, the Kuwait Investment Office. Right here in Plaza de Castilla, these twin office buildings pierce the Madrid skyline at 114 meters, each boasting 26 floors. Completed in 1996, the Puerta de Europa holds a special place in architectural history. These were the first inclined skyscrapers in the world, each leaning at a 15-degree angle. Imagine the engineering feat it took to design and construct these leaning behemoths. American architects Philip Johnson and John Burgee dreamt up this daring design. The Spanish construction company, Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas, brought that vision to life. The towers lean towards each other. This creates a dramatic effect, almost as if they’re about to meet in a gravity-defying embrace. One tower, the west tower, sports a blue helipad. Its twin, the east tower, has a red one. Did you know that the Puerta de Europa almost housed the telecommunications company Airtel? They had a pre-contract for 40% of the west tower in 1995. The deal fell through, reportedly due to disagreements about Airtel’s logo placement. After some financial turmoil, the towers are now owned by CaixaBank and Realia. The Puerta de Europa has also graced the silver screen. It played a key role in the 1995 film *The Day of the Beast*, with the climax unfolding on one of the then nearly-completed towers. These towers aren’t just office buildings. They represent innovation, ambition, and a modern marvel in the heart of Madrid. They’re a testament to human ingenuity and a must-see for any visitor.
