Imagine the year 1905. Cartagena was a city on the cusp of change. The old wooden bridge that once connected Getsemaní and Manga, a mere wooden platform, could no longer accommodate the increasing traffic. This is where the story of the Puente Henrique L. Román truly begins.

The original bridge, a marvel of engineering for its time, was a marvel of engineering for its time, built in 1906 by Eliseo Navarro. It was constructed of wood, a sight to behold, and was just a simple platform, connecting Getsemaní and Manga and was known as “The Bridge over the Water.” But as progress marched on, the need for a more sturdy and sophisticated bridge was felt, and in 1927, a new bridge was erected, this time with reinforced concrete. This was the bridge that would forever be known as the Puente Henrique L. Román. It’s named after Henrique Román, a brother of a famous pharmacist and a governor of Bolívar, a man who understood the importance of public works.

The new bridge was a masterpiece designed by Gastón Lelarge, a prominent architect of the era. He incorporated neoclassical elements into the bridge’s design, giving it its distinctive beauty. Lelarge was known for his work in Bogotá. His signature columns, topped with spheres, added a touch of elegance to the bridge. He used a French school of design.

Until 1986, the Puente L. Román stood as a symbol of Cartagena’s resilience and progress. The bridge was demolished and a new one built, this time allowing for boat traffic in the canal.
