Imagine a bridge not of steel and stone but of community and resilience. This is Puente de Vallecas, one of Madrid’s 21 districts. It stands as a testament to the city’s diverse soul.

Puente de Vallecas is more than just a location on a map. It’s a vibrant tapestry woven with history. It’s a place where the spirit of Madrid thrives. This district forms the geographical area of Vallecas with Villa de Vallecas.

Let’s journey through its story. The name Puente de Vallecas translates to Bridge of Vallecas. The name doesn’t refer to the M-30 bridge. Instead, it points back to an old bridge. This bridge once spanned the Arroyo Abroñigal. It connected Vallecas to Madrid’s center.

Puente de Vallecas is divided into six administrative wards. These are Entrevías San Diego Palomeras Bajas Palomeras Sureste Portazgo and Numancia. Each ward adds its unique flavor to the district’s identity.

Interestingly, Puente de Vallecas came into being through annexation. In 1951, the municipality of Vicalvaro joined Madrid. The land now occupied by Puente de Vallecas once belonged to Vicalvaro.

This district is home to about 241,603 people. This makes it one of Madrid’s most populous areas.

The district is bounded by several key routes. The M-30 lies to the west. The A-3 sits to the north. Avenida de la Democracia and the Madrid-Zaragoza railway line define the southeast. The M-40 is also to the southeast. Finally, the Manzanares River marks the southwest boundary.

Puente de Vallecas shares borders with several other districts. Villa de Vallecas lies to the east. Moratalaz and Vicálvaro are to the north. Retiro and Arganzuela are located to the west. Usera sits to the southwest.

Sports play a significant role in the life of Puente de Vallecas. The district lends its name to Rayo Vallecano de Madrid. This historic football team has its stadium here. Other sports also thrive. These include volleyball, lifesaving, rhythmic gymnastics and rugby.

One event stands out. The San Silvestre Vallecana is an internationally recognized 10 km race. It draws both amateur and professional athletes each December 31.

Puente de Vallecas has a rich association movement. Numerous associations focus on neighborhood issues, children, youth, social causes, culture, and the environment.

The district is known for its cultural contributions. In the late 1970s, El Gayo Vallecano fostered a strong theatrical movement. Puente de Vallecas became a hub for rock music throughout the 20th century. Bands like Obús, Ska-P and Topo emerged from here.

Even today, Puente de Vallecas maintains a strong sense of community. It embraces its history. It looks forward to the future. Investment in housing here is profitable. In Puente de Vallecas the profitability reaches 9.8%. As we leave Puente de Vallecas remember its story. It is a story of a bridge. The bridge connects not only places but also people.
