Across three graceful arches the Puente de los Capuchinos stands silent sentinel. This unassuming bridge in Madrid’s El Pardo hides a rich history. Designed by the renowned Francesco Sabatini in the late 18th century it was part of a grand urban plan. King Carlos III commissioned Sabatini to build the Casa de Infantes. The bridge was to connect this building to the river Manzanares. The Casa de Infantes no longer exists. Its location is near the present-day Iglesia de la Virgen del Carmen. The original Puente de los Capuchinos was more extensive than the one we see today. It boasted six arches. The river’s proximity necessitated a retaining wall. This protected against potential floods. Sabatini ensured gentle slopes leading to the river. The construction finished in 1785 without Sabatini’s direct involvement. Sadly little remains of Sabatini’s masterpiece. A devastating flood in the 1960s caused significant damage. The current bridge dates back to 1961 a product of the Franco regime. Although they aimed to preserve Sabatini’s style the rebuilt bridge features elements of the Austrian Habsburg architectural style. The use of exposed brick is one example. The original arches were lowered and the length reduced to three arches. The width however was substantially increased to accommodate motor vehicles. The construction of the El Pardo reservoir in 1970 drastically lowered the river’s water level. This impacted the bridge’s foundation. The pillars and abutments had to be reinforced. Concrete spurs were added to manage the flow and prevent future damage. Granite stone and exposed brick are the primary materials. Forged iron forms the protective railings. Puente de los Capuchinos gets its name from the Capuchin monastery. This monastery is locally known as the Cristo de El Pardo. It lies nearby adding to the bridge’s unique charm. Today the Puente de los Capuchinos silently witnesses the passage of time. It carries on a legacy of artistry and engineering. This understated marvel reflects Madrid’s history and its enduring spirit. It stands as a testament to the artistry and challenges of preserving heritage in a constantly evolving world.
