Established in 1815, Pu Chao Saming Phrai wasn’t always known by this name. Originally called Nakhon Khuean Khan, it served as a vital military outpost. King Buddha Loetla Nabhalai commissioned its construction to protect Bangkok from sea attacks. Three fortresses were erected along the eastern bank of the Chao Phraya River. One of these fortresses bore the name Pu Chao Saming Phrai. This name eventually became synonymous with the entire town. Pu Chao Saming Phrai, the fortress and now the town, draws its name from a legendary figure in Thai literature. The figure appears in the epic poem “Lilit Phra Lo”. This poem, believed to have been written between the 15th and 16th centuries, features Pu Chao Saming Phrai as a hermit with magical powers. He could even transform into a tiger. The name “Saming Phrai” translates to “Lord of the Spirits,” a title often associated with guardian spirits of the jungle. In 2015, Pu Chao Saming Phrai boasted a population of 77,976. The town’s growth reflects the broader urbanization trend around Bangkok. As people migrated towards the capital, surrounding areas like Pu Chao Saming Phrai experienced a population boom. This transformation from military outpost to bustling town reflects Thailand’s dynamic history and cultural richness. The name, rooted in ancient lore, adds a layer of mystique.
