Journey back to 1947. Imagine Ghana, then the Gold Coast, buzzing with anticipation. The Providence Baptist Church story intertwines with this pivotal moment in Ghanaian history. Nigerian Baptist traders had already established a presence here. They had even formed the Yoruba Baptist Association. But something was missing. Their services, conducted in Yoruba, weren’t resonating with the local Ghanaian population. The Providence Baptist Church and other Ghanaian Baptist churches became part of this narrative of change. The Yoruba Baptist Association transformed into the Gold Coast Baptist Conference in 1947. This opened doors for the burgeoning Ghanaian Baptist congregations. This marked the beginning of a new era for Baptist faith in Ghana, an era inclusive of the local population. A key figure in this transformation was Rev. H.R. Littleton. Sent by the Nigerian Baptist Mission, he arrived in Ghana with his wife. Their mission was to establish Baptist churches specifically for the indigenous people. The first such church was founded in 1952 at Boamang in the Ashanti Region. This laid the foundation for the Ghana Baptist Convention. The Providence Baptist Church, like many others, grew within this dynamic landscape. The Ghana Baptist Convention gained autonomy from the Nigerian Baptist Convention in 1963. It officially became the Ghana Baptist Convention in 1964. The Providence Baptist Church stands as a testament to this journey of faith.
