Timeless Provanhall. A majestic structure it stands before you. Its stones whisper tales of centuries past. Provan Hall in Easterhouse might just be Glasgow’s oldest house. Some believe it predates even Provand’s Lordship by a hair’s breadth.

Imagine a vast 5000-acre estate. It stretched across northeastern Glasgow. From Springburn to Bishop Loch its boundaries reached far and wide. This land a gift from the Earl of Cumbria around 1115. The Church received it when the Glasgow diocese was re-established.

Provan Hall was more than just a house. It served as a hunting lodge for archbishops. James IV even stayed here during hunting trips. Its walls have witnessed royal visits and celebrations. The building a testament to its historical significance.

Provan Hall wasn’t always a grand house. It began as part of the Barlanark church. One of 32 churches whose canons formed the cathedral chapter. The north range of a walled courtyard remains. A pair of houses enclosed by a screen wall and gateways.

The older building. Provanhall House. is approximately 550 years old. The exact date is debatable. Some architectural features suggest it could be as old as Provand’s Lordship or even older. It’s a remarkably well-preserved medieval fortified country house. One of the best in Scotland.

After the Reformation William Baillie a lawyer and President of the Court of Session resided here. His daughter married Robert Hamilton. Their descendants sold Provan Hall to Glasgow in 1667. The city maintained it for a century before returning it to private hands.

In 1938 the National Trust for Scotland acquired it. They leased it to Glasgow City Council. In 2003 the council supported restoration plans. A heritage trust now oversees its care. They aim to restore the buildings and create a visitor centre.

But Provan Hall is more than just stones and mortar. Ghosts roam its halls. A man with a dagger haunts the master bedroom. Reston Mather the last private owner appears on the staircase. Mary Queen of Scots and King James V are also said to visit. A woman and boy lost their lives here their spirits linger at the windows. Their spectral presence adds a chilling layer to its rich history. Provan Hall a place of historical significance a haunting mystery a testament to time. A true gem of Glasgow’s past.
