“A chilling breeze swept across the Ruhr Valley, carrying whispers of the past,” muttered old Heinrich, a former miner, as he pointed a gnarled finger towards the Protegohaube Zeche Borussia Süd. “This metal cap, this Protegohaube, it ain’t just a piece of metal. It’s a tombstone, a silent guardian over the heart of a sleeping giant.” The Protegohaube Zeche Borussia Süd is a poignant reminder of Dortmund’s rich mining history, a vestige of the once-mighty Zeche Vereinigte Borussia, also known as Zeche Borussia. Established in 1856, the colliery began its life with the sinking of two shafts, Schacht 1 and Schacht 2, along Borussiastraße. Coal production commenced just two years later in 1858. The name “Borussia,” derived from the Neo-Latin term for Prussia, reflects the region’s historical ties. The early years of Zeche Borussia were marked by both promise and peril. The colliery quickly developed, establishing multiple levels and driving tunnels to access valuable coal seams. However, the mine also faced challenges, including difficult geological conditions and the ever-present danger of firedamp explosions, a constant threat in underground coal mining. One notable incident occurred in 1883 when a series of explosions claimed the lives of several miners. Tragedy struck again in 1905. A devastating fire engulfed Schacht 1, leading to its complete collapse and the loss of 39 miners. This catastrophe forced the closure of the mine and the dismissal of its workforce. The mine was later dewatered and operations resumed, albeit from Schacht 2 and the newly constructed Schacht 4, later renamed Schacht Oespel 1. The ruined Schacht 1 was ultimately abandoned and sealed. By 1911, Zeche Borussia was absorbed by Zeche Oespel, marking the end of an era. The Protegohaube we see today stands as a lonely sentinel, protecting the entrance to what was once a bustling hub of activity. It silently speaks of the men who toiled beneath the earth, the triumphs, the tragedies, and the indelible mark they left on the landscape and the history of Dortmund.
