Time travelers step into the Prospect Historic District. Imagine 1904. Development begins on the Prospect Park Tract. The first house rises in 1906. This isn’t just any neighborhood. It’s a treasure trove of architectural styles. The Prospect Historic District in Pasadena is a National Register of Historic Places site.

The district boasts stunning homes along Prospect Boulevard and surrounding streets. It’s nestled between Westgate Street to the north and Orange Grove Boulevard to the south. Imagine J C Brainerd Nyles Eaton and John C Bentz. They purchased 32 acres of land. It was adjacent to a Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad spur. The land was transformed into 64 lots. Wide curved streets were planted with camphor and palm trees. A picturesque setting was created.

The Arroyo Park Tract followed in 1910. The two tracts were connected by the Prospect Boulevard Bridge built in 1908. This bridge is a marvel of engineering. It stands as a testament to the ingenuity of the time. The bridge is part of the district’s historical charm.

The architecture is simply breathtaking. You’ll find a variety of styles. Frank Lloyd Wright’s Millard House is here. So is Charles and Henry Greene’s Bentz House. A 1909 mansion designed by Alfred and Arthur Heineman stands proudly. A 1922 private residence designed by Myron Hunt completes the impressive collection. Each house is unique. Each speaks to a particular style and history. But they’re united by the landscape. Particularly the majestic camphor trees.

The Prospect Historic District isn’t just about pretty houses. It’s about a community. It’s a place where families lived and thrived. It’s served by Cleveland Elementary School Washington Middle School and John Muir High School. Today you can explore this amazing district. Take a stroll among the historic homes.
