In 2008, Hurricane Ike tore through our city, leaving many buildings, including the beloved Progressive Baptist Church, severely damaged. This church, a pillar of the Third Ward community since 1875, faced a daunting challenge. The historic building, erected in 1941 under the leadership of Dr. N.S. Brown, bore the brunt of the storm’s fury. Yet, from the ashes of despair rose a spirit of resilience. The congregation, though small, rallied under the unwavering guidance of their pastor, Rev. L.L. Atkins, Sr. Imagine their faith. With less than 100 members, they embarked on a remarkable journey to rebuild their sanctuary. Their vision: a state-of-the-art facility that would not only serve as a place of worship but also as a beacon of hope for the community. By April 2011, against all odds, their dream was realized.
