“Wow a full city block” I heard someone exclaim. That’s Proctor Plaza Park for you. Right here in the heart of the Heights neighborhood.
Proctor Plaza Park isn’t just a patch of green. It’s a living testament to community spirit. Gifted to the neighborhood in 1924 its purpose was simple: a place for kids to play. That simple goal shaped its history.
The park wasn’t always the haven it is today. A basketball court once stood where children now create chalk masterpieces. But problems arose. The court attracted unwanted crowds. Drinking and fighting marred its atmosphere. Parents feared bringing their children.
The Proctor Plaza Neighborhood Association stepped in. They made a change. They removed the basketball court. This decision transformed Proctor Plaza Park. It became a family-friendly space.
Today the park thrives. It offers a shaded playground a baseball field tennis courts and a covered pavilion. A community center sits at its heart. This is where the magic happens. After school programs t-ball and soccer are free for kids. The air-conditioned clubhouse with its restrooms is a lifesaver for parents.
The park’s success is partly due to Pam Foote the recreation supervisor since 2005. She’s not just an administrator she’s a community builder. She negotiated deals for discounted security for events. She even secured free use of the facility for non-profits.
Proctor Plaza Park is more than just a park. It’s a reflection of a community’s commitment to its children its families and its future. So take a stroll. Feel the community spirit. Enjoy this little slice of Houston heaven.
