Gaze upon the Prinzregentenbrunnen. This magnificent fountain stands proudly in Augsburg’s Bahnhofviertel. It’s a testament to a bygone era. An era of regal celebrations and artistic grandeur.

The Prinzregentenbrunnen wasn’t just built. It was a deliberate act. Augsburg’s city council decided to honor Prince Regent Luitpold. His 80th birthday in 1901 was the perfect occasion. They envisioned a monumental fountain. A fitting tribute to his long reign.

They chose a perfect spot. A vacant area from the former Schnurbeinschen Gartengute. Munich sculptor Franz Bernauer was tasked with the design. The bronze statue itself was created by Augsburg’s Ludwig August Riedinger. The foundation stone was laid on March 12 1901. The unveiling followed two years later.

The bronze statue of Prince Regent Luitpold is breathtaking. It weighs 867 kilograms. It stands 26 meters tall. He is depicted in the attire of a Knight of the Order of St Hubertus. A symbol of his prestige and power.

The fountain’s basin is equally impressive. It’s made of shell limestone. Its diameter spans 13 meters. The basin is framed by granite steps. It creates a grand and elegant setting for the central statue.

Look closely at the octagonal pedestal. It supports the weighty bronze figure. Notice the inscriptions. They declare “Luitpold Prince Regent of Bavaria”. Below are high reliefs. They depict Luitpold’s predecessors. You’ll find Ludwig I Maximilian II Max Joseph I and Ludwig II. Each relief tells a silent story of Bavarian history.

The Prinzregentenbrunnen almost met a tragic end. During World War II it was removed. The statue was taken to Hamburg. There it narrowly escaped being melted down. Fortunately it was returned to its rightful place in Augsburg in 1950.

Today the Prinzregentenbrunnen remains a cherished landmark. It is a beautiful symbol. It embodies Augsburg’s rich history and artistic heritage. It stands as a silent observer. A silent witness to the city’s evolution through the ages. The Prinzregentenbrunnen is more than just a fountain. It’s a piece of living history. It’s a source of civic pride and a beacon of Augsburg’s enduring spirit.
