Prince Adalbert of Prussia. A name that echoes through naval history. Here in Hanover, though we’re far from the sea, his influence ripples through time. Prince Adalbert wasn’t just a royal figurehead. He was a visionary naval theorist and admiral. His insights shaped the very foundations of the Prussian, and later, the Imperial German Navy.

Born in Berlin in 1811, Prince Adalbert developed a fascination with naval power. He embarked on numerous voyages. He explored the Netherlands, Britain, Russia, Turkey, Greece, and even Brazil. He witnessed firsthand the vital role sea power played in a nation’s strength. These experiences fueled his passion for naval strategy. He meticulously studied the theories of naval warfare. In 1835-36, he drafted a pioneering plan for the construction of a Prussian fleet.

During the Revolutions of 1848, Prince Adalbert’s expertise was called upon. The German National Assembly tasked him with leading the Maritime Technical Commission. He penned the “Memorandum on the Construction of a German Fleet”. This document, still revered for its strategic brilliance, outlined three different fleet models. One focused on coastal defense, another on national defense and commerce protection, and the third on independent naval power. Prince Adalbert advocated for the middle ground. This approach would strengthen the German navy. It would also avoid antagonizing major maritime powers like Great Britain.

Prince Adalbert’s influence didn’t stop at theory. He played a crucial role in establishing the naval base at Wilhelmshaven. He foresaw the need for a Prussian presence on the North Sea. He orchestrated the Jade Treaty in 1853. This treaty paved the way for the construction of the fortress and naval base that would become Wilhelmshaven. He even endured a harrowing incident off the coast of Morocco in 1856. He was wounded after being shot at by local Riffians during a training cruise.

Even after the establishment of the German Empire in 1871, Prince Adalbert’s legacy continued. Although he retired from the newly renamed Imperial Navy, his contributions remained a cornerstone of German naval strategy. His vision extended beyond Prussian dominance. He dreamed of a unified German fleet. He believed in a Germany whose power reached across the oceans. So here we are, far from the crashing waves, but still within the reach of Prince Adalbert von Preussen’s enduring legacy. His name, attached to this historic ship, serves as a reminder. It is a reminder of the man who helped Germany find its place on the world’s seas.
