Did the walls of the Prins Albrecht Kazerne whisper secrets? I think they did. Stand here with me. Imagine the year is 1886. Construction begins on two buildings destined to house the esteemed Regiment of Grenadiers. This is the beginning of the Prins Albrecht Kazerne. These initial structures were just the start. Later, older buildings along Karmelietenstraat, stretching from Kernstraat to the Egmont Palace, were demolished to make way for a grander vision. The Grenadiers, always favored by the monarch, deserved fitting accommodations. King Leopold II also saw the barracks as a way to enhance Brussels with majestic public structures. The architect chose a Neo-Baroque style for the facade facing Karmelietenstraat. A unique corner tower, deviating from the monumental style, served as the Officers’ Mess. This was a nod to regimental traditions. In 1901, the barracks received its official name: Prins Albrecht Kazerne. This honored Prince Albert’s service in the regiment since 1892. Construction finished in 1907 with the inauguration of the Officers’ Mess. The regiment called this place home until 1939, except for their wartime service during World War I. Their departure in 1939 marked a final goodbye to Brussels. Little did they know. The Prins Albrecht Kazerne plaque before you commemorates a pivotal moment. On August 3, 1914, the 1st and 2nd Regiments of Grenadiers marched from these very grounds to defend their homeland. The inscription reminds us of their sacrifice. 1600 Grenadiers fell on the field of honor. Look closely at the main entrance. You’ll find this plaque, a poignant reminder of duty and loss. Inside the former barracks, now the Prins Albert Club, more stories unfold. Memorial plaques line the entrance hall. They list Belgian princes who served in the regiment and officers who perished in both World Wars. Even a bronze plaque depicting Princess Astrid and her children graces the grand staircase. The Prins Albrecht Kazerne stands as a testament to a regiment’s history, intertwined with the fate of a nation. It’s a place where echoes of marching boots and whispers of fallen heroes linger.
