Gazing up at this statue, we honor a man of profound influence. This is the Prince Raphi Phatthanasak Statue. It commemorates a key figure in Thai legal reform.

Prince Raphi Phatthanasak, Prince of Ratchaburi, was born in 1874. His father was King Chulalongkorn, also known as Rama V. His mother was Chao Chom Manda Talab. He had one full sister, Princess Ajrabarni Rajkanya.

Educated at the University of Oxford’s Faculty of Law, Prince Raphi dedicated his life to modernizing Thailand’s legal system. In 1892, the Ministry of Justice was established. Prince Raphi was appointed as Head Minister. His mission was to unify the judiciary.

Prince Raphi established the first law school in Thailand in 1897. He reorganized the Thai court system under the 1908 Law on Organization. He increased the independence of the Thai judiciary. This sometimes caused tensions with the king.

In 1910, a legal dispute led to Prince Raphi’s resignation. Twenty-eight senior judges resigned in loyalty to him. The king summoned all but one to resume their positions. Prince Raphi later returned to serve as the Minister of Agriculture. This was during the reign of King Vajiravudh.

Prince Raphi died in Paris in 1920. He was only 45 years old. His death was due to prostate cancer and kidney complications. King Rama VI arranged a royal cremation ceremony in Paris.

Prince Raphi Phatthanasak’s legacy lives on. He is celebrated as the “Father of Thai Law.” His contributions shaped Thailand’s legal framework. They continue to influence the nation today. Annually on August 7th, Raphi Day is observed. It marks the anniversary of Prince Raphi Phatthanasak’s death.

His work ensured a more just and equitable society. The Prince Raphi Phatthanasak Statue stands as a reminder of his dedication. It embodies his commitment to justice and the rule of law in Thailand. Take a moment to reflect on the impact of this remarkable man.
