Prince of Peace Lutheran Church undertook an exciting program. They restored and installed the 28 rank Wicks pipe organ. This was originally designed by the late Emile Robichaux. It was for Redeemer Lutheran Church. Redeemer Lutheran Church was a stalwart of the City’s Ninth Ward for decades.
The organ is said to be the first instrument. It had an exposed Great division. It was installed in the New Orleans area. Between 1997 and 2005, a volunteer crew rebuilt the organ. They operated on advice from Richard Schneider of Schneider Pipe Organs. Sections of the organ were damaged. Termites and neglect had taken their toll as the Redeemer congregation dwindled. The church eventually closed. The crew installed it in Prince Of Peace Lutheran Church after rebuilding.
Prince of Peace Lutheran Church previously had a Wicks organ. It was removed from Grace Lutheran Church. Grace Lutheran Church closed. It was sold to the owners of Christian’s Restaurant. That organ was then removed from Prince of Peace. This happened when the Redeemer instrument was completed.
Hurricane Katrina reportedly caused some minimal damage to the organ. But it is again being used for services. It is used in the restored facility.
The Wicks organ has a 3 manual console. It is Wicks Opus 4099. It was originally built for Redeemer Lutheran Church in 1960. The organ boasts an impressive array of divisions. These are GREAT, SWELL, CHOIR and PEDAL. Each division includes an assortment of pipes. The pipes offer a rich sound.
