The story of Baptists in Ghana began with Nigerian Yoruba traders. These traders settled here. They established churches. These churches formed an association connected to the Nigerian Baptist Convention. Unfortunately these churches struggled to attract Ghanaians. They only used the Yoruba language.
In 1947 the Yoruba association sought help. They asked the Nigerian Baptists and Southern Baptist missionaries in Nigeria for assistance. They wanted to send missionaries to the Ghanaians. In response the Nigerian Baptists sent the Littletons. The first church was organized in 1952. This was in the Ashanti region. Eventually the Yoruba churches and Ghanaian churches united. They formed an independent Ghana Baptist Convention.
Initially the Ghana Baptist Convention partnered with the International Mission Board. This was formerly the Foreign Mission Board. It belonged to the Southern Baptist Convention. Today they no longer work as closely together. The International Mission Board has significantly reduced its support. It now focuses on people groups that have never heard of Jesus Christ.
During the 1980s many Ghanaian Baptists grew dissatisfied. They resented the paternalistic attitude of the Southern Baptist missionaries. Disagreements often resulted in the missionaries’ opinions prevailing. This was because they held the financial resources. In 1987 the Ghanaian convention decided to diverge from the missionaries’ lead. Some churches chose to follow the missionaries. They did so because the missionaries controlled the money.
After this division the convention began to grow. Those churches that had left returned in 1992. Since then the convention has expanded. It now includes about 1000 churches with over 65000 members. Despite this growth only a small percentage of churches have their own buildings. There is also a shortage of trained ministers. A large portion of Ghanaian Baptists are young people.
Other Christian denominations have a longer history in Ghana. Baptists have earned respect. They are seen as people of faith and faithful living. The government has even invited Baptist representatives. They were asked to speak at meetings of the African Union.
One challenge facing Ghanaian Baptists is resources. They need buildings and leaders. These leaders should be willing to stay in rural areas. These areas have many churches but are very poor. There is little money to pay pastors.
Partnerships with outside conventions are welcomed. The Ghana Baptist Convention is working with the American Baptist Convention. Perhaps a list of priority projects could be put on a website.
