Founded in 1971 by Bishop Mattie B Hubbard the Prince of Peace Universal Tabernacle began its journey. It started humbly at 274 West 145th Street. The church’s early years were marked by resourcefulness and community spirit. They sold dinners to neighbors. This helped pay bills and grow their membership.
After five and a half years of growth the Prince of Peace Universal Tabernacle sought a larger space. Their prayers were answered. In 1977 they moved to 555-557 West 182nd Street. This new home came with a one-year mortgage-free period. Paying the mortgage proved challenging. Yet the congregation persevered. Their faith and hard work paid off. In December of 1995 they celebrated a mortgage-burning ceremony a testament to their collective effort.
Bishop Hubbard led the Prince of Peace Universal Tabernacle for 33 years. Her dedication and guidance shaped the church’s identity. Due to health concerns she eventually passed the torch. Rev Bettie Hampton a longtime associate took over as pastor in 2004. She continued the legacy of faith and service until her passing. The church remains a vital part of the community. It is affiliated with Metropolitan Spiritual Churches of Christ Inc. Today the Prince of Peace Baptist Church continues to serve and inspire its members. It stands as a beacon of faith hope and community. It’s a legacy built on prayers hard work and unwavering faith. A legacy we’re all fortunate to witness.
