Did you know Prince Kung’s Mansion once belonged to Heshen? This magnificent complex stands before us a testament to both extravagant wealth and dramatic downfall. Prince Kung’s Mansion wasn’t always known by this name. Initially constructed in 1777 it was the home of Heshen a powerful official. Heshen’s immense wealth and influence earned him the title of the most corrupt official in Chinese history.

After Heshen’s execution in 1799 the mansion changed hands. It eventually became the residence of Prince Gong a Manchu prince and influential statesman during the late Qing dynasty. The name Prince Kung’s Mansion reflects this later period of its history. The “Kung” is an older romanization of “Gong” meaning “Respectful” Prince.

The mansion’s history is full of intrigue. It boasts a massive area encompassing grand courtyards two-story buildings and even a Peking opera house. The gardens are equally impressive with twenty scenic spots artificial hills and ponds featuring rocks from Lake Tai. A remarkable eight-meter-long stele bearing the Chinese character for “fortune” stands as a testament to imperial blessings.

Imagine the lives lived within these walls. The lavish lifestyle of Qing Dynasty royalty played out here. The mansion later served as Furen Catholic University undergoing restoration by the Benedictines before being reclaimed by the state. Renovation in 2008 prepared the mansion for its role as a museum and tourist attraction. The Beijing opera house continues to host performances today bringing the mansion’s rich past to life.

Today Prince Kung’s Mansion stands as a remarkable reminder of China’s imperial past. The exquisite architecture the carefully preserved gardens and the stories they hold continue to captivate visitors from around the world. Step inside and let the history unfold before your eyes.
