Founded in 1943 the Primera Iglesia Bautista Fundamental Mexicana stands before you. This isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to faith perseverance and community. Originally located on West Durango and San Jacinto Streets it was a small wood-frame structure. Dr Manuel C Ortiz the founding pastor and his wife Belen nurtured a congregation that grew from five to five hundred members.

Imagine the intimate gatherings in that small church. Hear the fervent prayers echoing through the simple wooden walls. Feel the spirit of community as neighbors shared their faith and lives. This small church served as a beacon of hope on San Antonio’s Westside for thirty-three years. Then in 1973 God guided the church to its current location at 455 Avant Avenue. The old building was later sold and became part of Sidney Lanier High School.

The move marked a new chapter. The church continued to thrive under the leadership of Dr Manuel G Ortiz Jr the son of the founding pastor. He took over in 1976 after his father’s passing. Father and son have been the only pastors in the church’s history. For forty-five years Dr Manuel G Ortiz Jr and his wife Diamantina served their congregation. He passed away in 2021 leaving behind a lasting legacy.
