Imagine Johannesburg in 1888. Gold fever gripped the city. Amidst this frenzy a small group of fifteen men and women gathered. They sought something more enduring than gold. These people started the Baptist work in the northern part of South Africa. This was the beginning of what would become the Primeira Igreja Batista.

The Rev. W. E. Kelly played a crucial role. He journeyed from Port Alfred Baptist Church to Johannesburg. His mission was clear. He wanted to find Baptists and establish a church. The Baptist Church of Johannesburg was founded on June 20 1892. Later it was called Johannesburg Central Baptist Church. Today it is known as Central Community Fellowship.

The first church was built at Plein and Wanderers Streets southwest corner. Kelly also secured sites for other Baptist churches. These included Troyeville Baptist Germiston Baptist Church and Krugersdorp Baptist churches. The Primeira Igreja Batista grew from these humble beginnings.

Other churches soon followed. Troyeville Baptist Church began under Rev T. Chapman. Boksburg Baptist Church was established in 1889. Its leader was Rev. H. T. Cousins. Pretoria Free Baptist Congregational Church later Central Baptist Church Pretoria formed in 1889. R. H. Brotherton led this church. Krugersdorp Baptist Church followed in 1891. An evangelist A. Pearson led it. Wakkerstroom in Transvaal started in 1898. Rev. T. R. Matthews was its leader.

On October 7 1891 a significant event occurred. Representatives from several churches gathered. These included Central Baptist Church Johannesburg Krugersdorp Baptist Church and Boksburg Baptist Church. They also included affiliated works like Johannesburg Native Church and Palmiet Native Mission. They formed the Transvaal Baptist Association. This later became the Baptist Northern Association.

Rev. W. E. Kelly became the first president. Rev. T. Cousins was the vice-president. Rev. A. Pearson served as secretary. The initial member churches were Johannesburg Troyeville Krugersdorp and Boksburg. They created a constitution. They decided to become a legal entity. They would issue ministerial recognition certificates. They also aimed to collect money for mission work.

The Association applied to join the Baptist Union. The Baptist Union initially refused this application. This refusal unsettled the Association. However it decided to continue as planned. Later in December 1896 the Association reapplied. This time the Baptist Union accepted them.

The Anglo-Boer War significantly impacted progress. Many people left Johannesburg between May and October 1899. This exodus slowed the Association’s work. However after the war Baptist leaders saw great opportunity.

The Transvaal Baptist Association reconstituted. It became the Transvaal Baptist Church Council. It bought land for future church development. This included Denver Linden Richmond and Rosebank. They also started work in Bez Valley. Churches began in Brakpan Springs Roodepoort and Germiston.

Despite these efforts the Baptist work experienced challenges. These included apathy shortage of pastors lack of funds and reluctance to join the Transvaal Baptist Association. Over time the Baptist Northern Association expanded. It reached beyond Transvaal borders. Bloemfontein Baptist Church and Bulawayo Baptist Church joined in 1934.

Today the Baptist Northern Association has many churches. The Primeira Igreja Batista has a rich history. It reflects faith resilience and expansion. It stands as a testament to the enduring power.
