Primeira Igreja Baptista Adoração e Vida began with a vision. It started as a partnership between OM and Missão Kairós in 1999. OM is Operação Mobilização. It is a missionary organization active in over 100 countries. Missão Kairós is a Brazilian evangelical association. They work in countries with few evangelicals since 1988.
Cristina do Amaral led this partnership. She was a missionary from Brazil. She had five years of experience in Guinea. She embraced the challenge. Her work began in Maia. It expanded to other northern areas. The film “Jesus” became a key tool. It was part of the “Love Europe” campaign. It helped connect with people interested in God. These people were then introduced to Bible studies.
The first worship service happened on April 21 2000. People who studied the scriptures gathered. In 2001 a new partnership formed. It was between Igreja Evangélica Congregacional de Chelas and Igreja Batista Adoração e Vida. Fábbio Simões da Motta represented the Chelas church. Almir Marcos Mauruto guided Igreja Batista Adoração e Vida. Bible studies and baptisms followed. They also held baby dedications.
In 2007, the Maia church became independent. Cristina was ordained as pastor. She was ordained by the Maia church and IBAV. Cristina stepped away from 2007 to 2012 due to health. Pastor Paulo Mendes served as interim pastor. Cristina returned in 2012. The process to officially legalize the church continued. It had stopped in 2007.
In 2013, the church officially became Primeira Igreja Batista Adoração e Vida. The government recognized Cristina as a minister. This church is more than a historical marker. It is a living community.
Primeira Igreja Baptista do Porto is important to note. It is the first Baptist community in Porto. It was organized on December 20 1908. This church follows the New Testament model.
