“The Hall on Peat Road” is what many locals call it. Priesthill United Reform Church stands as a welcoming beacon in the heart of Priesthill. This church is more than just a building. It is a vibrant hub for the community.
Priesthill United Reform Church had humble beginnings. The Hall was formally St Roberts Hall. It served as a local Catholic Chapel. Priesthill URC began using the Hall for Sunday worship. Then in 2011, it officially became Priesthill URC.
The church sees itself as a home. The Hall is a hub for the community. It provides a comfortable and safe space. Local people gather here. Services and agencies meet locals. They build relationships and find support. It is a conduit for the community. It brings hope and joy.
The church is small but welcoming. It aims to be a place where people can encounter the love of God. Every Sunday, the church meets for worship at 9.30am. Refreshments are served afterwards. Once a month, they share in Holy Communion. Their worship is relaxed and traditional. It includes Bible readings, hymns, and a sermon. Visiting preachers lead the services. Reverend Helen Garton is their current Minister.
Priesthill United Reform Church buzzes with activity throughout the week. Various clubs and groups use the premises. There is something for everyone to get involved in.
The church is served by a team of Elders. Alongside the Minister, they ensure the church is well-run. They care for its members. Elders represent the local congregation. They participate in wider church councils. They also represent the church in the local community.
Reverend Helen Garton is the Minister. She moved to Scotland in June 2023. Before that, she ministered to congregations in Oxford. She was also Chaplain to students in Oxford. Helen began her career in interfaith relations. She worked for Christian Aid. She also served at URC Church House. She is the Interfaith Advocate for the Synod of Scotland. She also represents URC at Glasgow Churches Together. She is a published writer of worship resources.
Nancy serves as an Elder and the Church Secretary. She managed the Girls’ Brigade. She helps manage Hall bookings. Lynn is an Elder and the Girls’ Brigade Captain. She coordinates the virtual “Daily Devotions Service”. Ruth maintains the Prayer Requests book. She helps with opening and closing the building.
The Priesthill URC cluster also has a Church Related Community Worker. Alice Gilbert works alongside them.
The community has been welcoming. People have been friendly and talkative. Relationships with regulars are easy to build. More than just a new kitchen was needed. The garden requires work. It needs to be a functioning and safe space. Urban Roots manages the garden. They plan to address food insecurity. They also aim to provide children’s and young people’s activities.
Even with a small congregation the work can still be done. Good networks and partnerships make it possible.
Priesthill United Reform Church is more than just a place of worship. It is a testament to the power of community. It is a place where everyone is welcome and loved.
