In 1796, the last Dutch Governor of Ceylon, Johan van Angelbeek, completed a grand two-story residence. This very President’s House stands on the grounds of a former Portuguese church. The President’s House has witnessed a fascinating evolution. It transitioned from Dutch to British hands in 1804 when Angelbeek’s granddaughter sold it. It became the residence of British Governors, known as King’s House or Queen’s House. After Sri Lanka’s independence in 1948, it became the official residence of Governors-General. Then it transformed into the President’s House when Sri Lanka became a republic in 1972. The President’s House isn’t just a building. It’s a time capsule. Twenty-nine British Governors and six Sri Lankan Presidents have called it home. Even Queen Elizabeth II graced its halls during her 1954 visit, the sole monarch of Ceylon to do so. The President’s House has seen periods of neglect and restoration. During the 1980s and 1990s renowned Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa led extensive renovations. Today, the President’s House stands as a symbol of power. It serves as the official residence and workplace of the President of Sri Lanka. It’s also a stage for state events and meetings with foreign dignitaries. For a brief period in 2016, the public was granted access, offering a rare glimpse inside. This grand house has borne witness to key moments in Sri Lanka’s history, from colonial rule to independence. It continues to play a vital role in the nation’s political landscape.
