Locked away from the bustling streets of Kolkata, Presidency Jail stands as a silent sentinel of India’s turbulent past. Presidency Jail, originally known as the Old Alipore Jail, started as a collection of barrack-style buildings around a central courtyard. Its construction, beginning in 1810, was a gradual process, lacking a pre-planned design. Yet, this seemingly unremarkable structure became a pivotal stage in India’s struggle for independence. Presidency Jail initially housed long-term detainees under British rule. It also served as a holding point for those condemned to exile in the Cellular Jail in the Andaman Islands. Every six weeks, groups of deportees were shipped off across the sea, their lives irrevocably altered within Presidency Jail’s walls. The jail’s role transformed significantly in 1864 when it became Bengal’s first Central Prison. Its purpose evolved from simple confinement to a more structured system of incarceration. The original Presidency Jail housed notable figures like Sri Aurobindo Ghosh, who achieved spiritual enlightenment during his imprisonment for the Alipore Bomb Case. He penned his famous work “The Life Divine” within those very walls. Later, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose was held there, undertaking a hunger strike before his release in 1940. The gallows at Presidency Jail bore witness to the ultimate sacrifice made by freedom fighters like Kanailal Dutta, Satyendra Nath Bose, and Gopi Mohan Saha. Every year on Martyrs’ Day, the jail becomes a site of remembrance, honoring these sacrifices. With the construction of a new jail nearby in 1906, also called Alipore Jail, the original facility was renamed Presidency Jail. While the newer Alipore Jail was built with a modern radial design, the older Presidency Jail continued to resonate with the echoes of its past. The Alipore Central Correctional Home, the 1906 structure, housed several key figures in the pre-independence struggle. The newer jail, with its red brick exterior and imposing iron gates, stood as a stark symbol of colonial authority. Inside, the gallows and condemned cells served as chilling reminders of the price of freedom. Even today, these spaces are preserved, allowing visitors to connect with the stories of sacrifice and resilience.
