Peek through time with me right here at Prentis Hall. This building stands as a testament to both industry and innovation. Once a milk pasteurization plant, Prentis Hall now serves Columbia University. It houses the music department and the Computer Music Center.
Sheffield Farms built this impressive structure from 1909 to 1911. Frank A. Rooke designed it. The building could process 75,000 quarts of milk daily. Imagine the clatter of bottles and the hum of machinery.
Notice the facade. It features ornate white glazed terracotta in a French style. The walls are brick with a steel frame covered in concrete. Sheffield Farms built Prentis Hall to be vermin-proof and fire-proof. The bottling room once boasted a 27-foot ceiling with a skylight and large dome.
Columbia University acquired Prentis Hall in 1949. This purchase was part of a 12 million dollar expansion plan. Since the 1950s, Prentis Hall has housed the Computer Music Center. It is a hub for electronic music innovation.
During the Manhattan Project, Prentis Hall played a crucial role. It housed the Heat Transfer Research Facility. Scientists there performed critical heat flux tests. These tests helped determine the temperature at which a nuclear reactor would melt down. That’s a far cry from milk pasteurization.
Prentis Hall also holds a unique musical treasure. It houses the RCA Mark II Sound Synthesizer. This was the first programmable music synthesizer. It takes up an entire office wall. Otto Luening and Vladimir Ussachevsky moved it here. They were pioneers of electronic music. They also helped design the instrument.
Incredibly, Prentis Hall even faced scrutiny for potential radiation contamination. The Energy Research and Development Administration investigated it. This occurred in either 1967 or 1977. Pupin Hall was investigated too.
The building’s original design considered every detail. Wide ground floor windows allowed passersby to observe the milk pasteurization process. This transparency built trust in a time when tainted milk threatened public health. You can still see the cobblestones inside the interior driveway. Horses and trucks once loaded up with milk bottles here.
Victor Carrano worked in the Heat Transfer Research Facility for 17 years. He followed in his father’s footsteps. The facility tested nuclear reactor fuel assemblies. These tests were essential for nuclear safety.
Even today, some areas remain closed off. Signs warn “Restricted Access. Columbia University Operations Only.” These spaces echo with the building’s past. They serve as a reminder of the important work that once took place here.
Interestingly, Prentis Hall had a powerful electrical setup. It even caused a slight hesitation in the Eighth Avenue subway during motor startup. This was due to the high voltage feeder it shared with the subway.
Though its purpose has changed, Prentis Hall continues to contribute to Columbia University. Its walls hold stories of milk, music, and nuclear research. It stands as a unique blend of history and progress. It’s a place where the past echoes in the present.
