Prempeh College stands before us. It is a testament to quality education in Ghana. Prempeh College is located here in Kumasi. It is in the Ashanti Region. This all-boys boarding school has a rich history.
Let’s step back in time. The year is 1949. The Asanteman traditional authority founded Prempeh College. The British Colonial Government also helped. The Methodist Church Ghana and the Presbyterian Church of Ghana joined too. They wanted to create an excellent school.
The school is named after the King of Ashanti. His name was Sir Osei Tutu Agyeman Prempeh II. He donated the land. Prempeh College was modeled after Eton College in England. The goal was to provide top-notch education.
British modernist architects designed the campus. Maxwell Fry and Jane Drew were the architects. They incorporated modernist refinements. Their book describes these refinements in detail.
The opening ceremony occurred on February 5, 1949. Major C. O. Butler spoke at the ceremony. He stressed the need for training men. These men would fill important roles. They would work in agriculture, mining and engineering.

Prempeh College excels in competitions. It won the National Science and Maths Quiz multiple times. The school also won the Ghana National Debate Championship twice. Prempeh College won the World Robofest in 2016. They beat teams from China and Japan. The school won the Toyota Innovation Award that year.
Many notable alumni have attended Prempeh College. John Kufuor is a former president of Ghana. Dr. Kwabena Duffuor was a Governor of the Bank of Ghana. Matthew Opoku Prempeh is a Minister for Energy. These alumni made significant contributions to Ghana.
In 2024, Prempeh College celebrated its 75th anniversary. The theme was leadership and service to society.
