The city’s name in Portuguese is “o Porto”. This translates to “the port”. The name “Oporto” came from a misinterpretation of Portuguese pronunciation. The Latin name for Porto is Portus Cale. Portugal derives its name from Portus Cale.

Porto is famous for Port wine. Most Port wine exports come from Vila Nova de Gaia. This area is across the river from Porto. Cork, fruits, olive oil and building materials are also exported.

Porto is one of Europe’s oldest cities. UNESCO designated it a World Heritage Site in 1996. This recognition celebrated its historic buildings and monuments. Settlers first appeared in Porto around the 8th century BC. They settled near present-day Morro da Sé. This ancient village was called Cividade. Sadly, traces of Cividade vanished in 1940 due to demolition.

One of Porto’s most traditional dishes is Tripas à Moda do Porto. In the 15th century, Porto residents gave most meat to soldiers. They kept only tripe for themselves. Because of this, people from Porto are called “Tripeiros”.

Porto hosted the Formula One Portuguese Grand Prix. This occurred on the Boavista street circuit in 1958 and 1960. In 1807, Napoleon’s troops violently invaded Porto. British help was crucial in banishing the general. Napoleon invaded Porto again in 1809. During these invasions, the Bridge of Barques disaster occurred. Hundreds drowned in the Douro while trying to escape French soldiers.

The Torre dos Clérigos is a striking landmark. It is a baroque tower built from 1754 to 1763. Other highlights include the 12th-century Sé cathedral. Also notable are the two-storied Dom Luís Bridge and the Crystal Palace. The Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art is another highlight. Prominent Port wine lodges dominate Vila Nova de Gaia’s hillside.

The Romans took the Iberian Peninsula around 200 BC. They conquered Cale and renamed it Portus Cale. It became part of the province of Gaellicia. The capital of Gaellicia was Bracara Augusta. This is modern-day Braga.
