Is it possible that the Prefecture of Casablanca holds more stories than its modern facade suggests? The Prefecture of Casablanca stands as a testament to the city’s vibrant history. It has been a focal point of significant events.

Casablanca’s story stretches back to the 7th century BC. Berbers founded and settled the area. Phoenicians then Romans used it as a port. In the 14th century, under the Merinids, Anfa which is today’s Casablanca rose as a port.

The Portuguese destroyed the town in 1468. They later built a fortress in 1515. The village around it was called Casa Branca meaning White House. Sultan Mohammed ben Abdallah rebuilt the town between 1756 and 1790. He called it ad-Dār al-Bayḍāʾ. This is the Arabic translation of Casa Branca.

In the 19th century, Casablanca grew as a wool supplier to Britain. The population increased. By the early 20th century, French colonialists arrived. By 1921 the city’s population rose to 110000. This was largely due to the growth of shanty towns.

The French bombarded Casablanca in 1907. This marked the beginning of their invasion of Morocco from the west. Under French control Casablanca became a key colonial port. The French formalized their control in 1912.

During World War II Casablanca hosted the Anfa Conference in 1943. Churchill and Roosevelt discussed the war. They adopted the doctrine of unconditional surrender.

Casablanca was a center of anti-French rioting in the 1940s and 1950s. Morocco gained independence in 1956.

In 1961, the city hosted the Casablanca Conference. Progressive African leaders attended. King Muhammad V received Gamal Abd An-Nasser Kwame Nkrumah and others.

Casablanca was a departure point for Jewish emigration to Israel between 1961 and 1964. Student protests and riots shook the city in 1965. King Hassan II responded harshly.

Riots broke out in 1981 due to rising food costs. The government repressed the protests. In March 2000 women demonstrated for legal reforms. King Mohammed VI later enacted a new family law in 2004.

Terrorist attacks struck Casablanca in 2003 and 2007.

Today the Prefecture of Casablanca is part of the Casablanca-Settat region. It oversees several arrondissements. The Prefecture plays a vital role in Casablanca’s administration. The Governor ensures legal procedures are followed.
