Gazing upon Preaek Pra Al-Ahla Mosque, one can’t help but sense a story waiting to unfold. Preaek Pra Al-Ahla Mosque stands as a testament to Cambodia’s rich, diverse religious tapestry. It’s a relatively recent addition to Phnom Penh’s skyline, a vibrant hub for the Muslim community. The original Al-Serkal Mosque, which stood near Boeung Kak lake, was a gift from the Al Serkal Family of the United Arab Emirates. It opened its doors in 1968. This earlier mosque, however, was replaced by a stunning new structure, also a gift from the UAE. The new Al-Serkal Mosque was inaugurated in 2015, a beacon of modern Islamic architecture. Imagine stepping inside. The air is cool, a welcome respite from the tropical heat. Your eyes are drawn upwards, captivated by the intricate mosaics adorning the ceilings and the magnificent chandelier suspended from the central dome. The walls, lined with rose and turquoise tiles handcrafted by Algerian artisans, create a mesmerizing spectacle of color and pattern. Preaek Pra Al-Ahla Mosque, the new Al-Serkal mosque, isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a symbol of resilience and resurgence for Cambodia’s Muslim community, many of whom are ethnic Cham. The Cham community endured unimaginable hardship under the Khmer Rouge regime, a period marked by religious persecution and immense loss. Preaek Pra Al-Ahla Mosque represents a new chapter, a testament to their enduring faith. However, the mosque’s story is not without its challenges. A proposed road project threatened to disrupt the serenity of this sacred space, dividing the community and sparking protests. The road’s fate remains uncertain. But Preaek Pra Al-Ahla Mosque continues to serve as a vital center for prayer, community, and hope. It’s a place where the faithful gather, their voices uniting in prayer, creating a symphony of devotion that resonates far beyond the mosque’s walls.
