Unlike its twin, Prasat Top East, this temple boasts a history as intricate as the carvings adorning its walls. Prasat Top West began its life far earlier than its neighbor, perhaps as far back as the 9th century. Inscriptions tell us it served as a Hindu sanctuary, a testament to gods like Shiva and Vishnu. However, as the centuries marched on, and the Bayon period dawned, Prasat Top West underwent a transformation. It was adopted as a Buddhist temple, a beacon of enlightenment. Intriguingly, even when Hinduism saw a resurgence in the late 13th century, Prasat Top West remained a place of Buddhist devotion. The temple we see today, a harmonious blend of architectural styles, is mostly from this period. Look closely at the carvings – some are even Theravada Buddhist, a whisper of faith from as late as the 17th century. Prasat Top West stands as a testament to the fluidity of faith, a place where Hinduism and Buddhism have left their indelible marks on the very soul of the stone.
