“A shimmering sea of silver,” whispered a man, his eyes wide with awe. That’s what awaits us as we step inside the Praek Aeng Pagoda. Commonly known as the Silver Pagoda, it’s part of the Royal Palace compound in Phnom Penh. But don’t let the common nickname fool you. This isn’t merely a pagoda with silver accents. Oh no, the Praek Aeng Pagoda boasts a floor entirely covered in over 5,000 shimmering silver tiles. These tiles, weighing over a ton, were a gift fit for a king, literally! Commissioned by King Norodom, the Praek Aeng Pagoda served as his personal place of worship and housed some of the most sacred Buddhist relics. The royal connection doesn’t end there. Inside rests a life-sized golden Buddha. This magnificent statue, adorned with nearly 10,000 diamonds, is a sight to behold. As you gaze upon its shimmering surface, imagine the countless hours of meticulous craftsmanship that brought it to life. Sadly, due to its sacred nature, we can only admire the silver floor from a distance, as most of it remains covered for protection. But trust me, the glimpse you’ll get near the entrance is more than enough to leave you breathless.
