Madrid’s first democratic park, designed by the community, awaits us here at Pradolongo. This green space in the Usera district spans over 72 hectares. It ranks as Madrid’s fourth-largest park. Only Casa de Campo, El Retiro, and Parque del Oeste are bigger. Pradolongo was inaugurated in 1983.

Under Mayor Enrique Tierno Galván, Pradolongo was created. The park embodies a communal space, blending nature and community. Its design embraces modern architecture. It prioritizes accessibility and inclusivity for all ages and interests.

Notice Pradolongo’s central gazebo. It serves as a focal point for gatherings and events. Nearby, a circular iron structure creates a canopy of greenery. This shaded walkway feels like a natural cathedral. The park’s terrain features ramps and gentle slopes. They lead to the serene lake at Pradolongo’s heart.

Weekends are lively at Pradolongo. Remote-controlled boat enthusiasts gather around the lake. They transform the tranquil waters into a lively racetrack. For the adventurous, kayak-polo is also available. This sport combines water polo, basketball, and kayaking.

Children are well-catered for at Pradolongo. A castle-themed play area is a highlight. Kids explore interconnected structures with bridges and slides. A low fence ensures safety. Nearby benches offer parents a relaxing view. Other playgrounds feature swings and obstacle courses. Spinning rides promise endless fun.

For fitness enthusiasts, Pradolongo has a 750-meter track. This cycling and jogging track loops around the park. Runners, cyclists, and walkers all enjoy this space. It is not part of the larger Anillo Verde Ciclista. Yet, it provides ample room for workouts.

Next to the lake sits Pradolongo’s Botanical Garden. Established in 1979, it covers 4,200 square meters. This garden displays 180 species of trees and shrubs. These plants are arranged in 30 geometrically designed flowerbeds. Conifers, broadleaf trees, and aromatic herbs create a sensory feast.

Look for the Iglesia Maris Stella near Pradolongo’s entrance. It is known as the Church of the Rooster. This is due to the weather vane on its dome. Built in the early 20th century, it has brick walls and a slate dome. The Spanish Civil War left its mark here. Originally a school, it educated local children.

Pradolongo is more than a green space. It demonstrates community spirit and urban innovation. Seek a peaceful retreat, family fun, or sports. This park offers something for everyone. Its blend of nature, history, and amenities make it a must-visit. Pack a picnic, grab your bike, or stroll through Pradolongo.
