Beneath Chandni Chowk’s vibrant chaos stands the Pracheen Shri Gauri Shankar Mandir. This temple whispers tales of faith and resilience. Let’s step inside this serene haven dedicated to Lord Shiva and Parvati.

The Pracheen Shri Gauri Shankar Mandir is an 800-year-old temple. It is one of Delhi’s oldest. Legend says a Maratha soldier, Apa Ganga Dhar, built it. Severely wounded in battle, he prayed to Lord Shiva. He vowed to build a temple if he survived. Miraculously, he recovered and kept his promise. His name is inscribed near the temple entrance. In 1959, Seth Jaipura renovated the temple, adding his inscription above the windows.

Inside the Pracheen Shri Gauri Shankar Mandir, you’ll find a ancient brown Lingam. This phallus stone represents Lord Shiva. It sits encased in marble, symbolizing the female organ. Silver snakes surround it representing cosmic energy. Above the Lingam, a silver vessel drips water continuously. The Lingam symbolizes the universe’s center.

Behind the Lingam stand idols of Shiva and Parvati called Gauri-Shankar. They are adorned with real gold jewelry. Their sons, Ganesh and Kartik, are also present. The temple is a significant place for Shaivites, devotees of Lord Shiva.

The Pracheen Shri Gauri Shankar Mandir’s courtyard bustles with activity. Devotees purchase sandalwood paste, flowers, and bilva leaves for puja. A marble chair honors Bhagat Swaroup Bramachari, a saint who spent 50 years here. His portrait and teachings about enlightenment are displayed.

The Pracheen Shri Gauri Shankar Mandir’s entrance features marble steps and carved pillars. The temple’s walls have beautiful silver paintings. These paintings depict scenes from Hindu mythology.

Daily rituals include aarti and abhishekam. The best time to visit is during the evening aarti. The temple is most vibrant during Shivratri. It is decorated elaborately for the festival. Mondays, dedicated to Lord Shiva, are also special.

You can reach the Pracheen Shri Gauri Shankar Mandir easily. Take the metro to Chandni Chowk station. The temple welcomes people of all backgrounds. Remember, photography is prohibited inside the temple.

The Pracheen Shri Gauri Shankar Mandir stands as a testament to devotion. It showcases the enduring love of Gauri and Shankar. It offers a tranquil escape from Delhi’s bustling streets. May your visit bring you peace and a deeper connection to the divine.
