Why is Pozzo d’Adda named after wells? Stand here before me and let me tell you a story. Pozzo d’Adda a small town near Milan has a history rooted in its alluvional land. Numerous deep wells dotted the landscape. This gave the town its name. The name means well of Adda. The Adda is a river. The river does not actually run through Pozzo d’Adda. However the noble d’Adda family owned land there. Their name became part of the town’s name.
Our journey starts in 1252. That’s when Pozzo d’Adda first appears in documents. An old record shows a land sale between the Monastery of Sant’Ambrogio and a local landowner. This landowner lived in “Pozzo di Vaprio”. At that time Pozzo was part of Vaprio d’Adda. In the 13th century Pozzo d’Adda gained independence. It became its own municipality. It wasn’t until 1862 that “d’Adda” was formally added.
Pozzo d’Adda’s location between Bergamo and Milan is key. It became a trade crossroads for centuries. For a long time it remained an agricultural community. Then in the 20th century things changed. Major metalworking industries and artisan workshops arrived. Pozzo d’Adda’s economy transformed.
Two churches dedicated to Sant’Antonio Abate stand as testaments to the town’s religious roots. The old church dates back to the 16th century. It was renovated in the Baroque style in the 17th century. Now it houses the Lumen Gentium cultural center. The new church consecrated in 1901 became the main place of worship.
Every January 17th a special tradition takes place. The blessing of animals and cars happens. Festivities follow. They end with a bonfire. Pozzo d’Adda’s history is rich.
