Did you know that Powerscourt Estate was once home to one of the most extraordinary pet cemeteries in the world? Right here, in front of us, is a true testament to the love and devotion we humans have for our animal companions.

Powerscourt Estate, located in Enniskerry, County Wicklow, is a majestic country estate known for its stunning house and beautifully landscaped gardens. The original 13th century castle was transformed in the 18th century by the German architect Richard Cassels, who added a grand Palladian facade, two circular domed towers, and a long avenue of beech trees leading to the house.

The estate has seen its fair share of history, with past owners including the Powerscourt family and, since 1961, the Slazenger family. But it is the seventh Viscount Powerscourt, Mervyn Wingfield, who left his lasting mark on the estate in the mid-19th century. Reaching his majority, he embarked upon an extensive renovation of the house and created new gardens inspired by his travels to magnificent gardens like the Palace of Versailles. His vision resulted in a collection of diverse gardens, with the Japanese gardens, the Tower Valley with its stone tower, and the intriguing Triton Lake, all adding to the allure of Powerscourt.

It is this seventh Viscount who is responsible for the heartwarming pet cemetery, and its tombstones are said to be “astonishingly personal”. You can still see the inscription on the headstone of a pet dog named “Bouncer” who, according to the inscription, was tragically “lost from view” in 1878.

But Powerscourt Estate offers so much more. Imagine spending a sunny afternoon exploring the gardens, enjoying a picnic, and being delighted by the sight of the winged horse statues, or taking a stroll through the walled gardens. Then, if you feel brave enough, take a trip to Powerscourt Waterfall, just a short distance from the estate, and experience the cascading waters of Ireland’s highest waterfall.

Leave time to explore the Powerscourt Hotel too, a stylish neo-Palladian hotel built on the estate. One of the two 18 hole golf courses, known as the “East” course, even hosted the Irish PGA Championship in 1998. Powerscourt Estate is a captivating place where history, natural beauty, and a love for animals are woven together, offering an unforgettable experience for every visitor.
