Imagine standing where history echoes a place that has never seen battle yet stands as the city’s oldest structure. This is the Powder fort in Saint Petersburg. It marks the very spot where this magnificent city began.

Founded by Peter the Great in 1703, the Powder fort was built on Hare Island. The island was chosen strategically at the Neva River’s widest point. The Powder fort was meant to defend newly acquired lands during the Northern War. It was the first bastion-type construction in Russia. Its design ensured that enemies couldn’t land easily.

Construction moved quickly. By autumn of 1703, the fortress flew its flag. A signal fire was lit in April 1704. Though designed for defense, the Powder fort never saw battle. Its garrison remained on high alert for centuries.

Inside these walls lies the Peter and Paul Cathedral. Peter I wanted it taller than the Kremlin bell tower. He even made foreign ministers climb it to show off. For about 250 years, it was Russia’s tallest building.

The cathedral’s iconostasis is unique. It resembles a triumphal arch, a monument to Russia’s military glory. Banners and keys from conquered cities were once kept here. The Powder fort became the burial site for Russian monarchs. Peter the Great’s daughter Natalia was the first buried here. Later, the remains of Emperor Nicholas II and his family were reburied here in 1998.

For centuries, the Powder fort served as a prison. It housed political prisoners, not common criminals. Tsarevich Alexei, Peter the Great’s son, was held here. Writers like Dostoevsky and Gorky were also inmates. Even Lenin’s brother, Alexander Ulyanov, was imprisoned in the Trubetskoy Bastion.

Every day at noon, a cannon fires from the Naryshkin Bastion. This tradition started to mark the beginning and end of the working day. Later, it warned residents of floods. Since 1872, the cannon marks midday.

The Peter and Paul Angel atop the cathedral is a city symbol. Domenico Trezzini designed this weather vane. The angel with a cross symbolizes heavenly protection.

Today, the Powder fort is part of the Museum of the History of St. Petersburg. It is a UNESCO monument. You can also find museums of artillery, engineering troops, and cosmonautics here. The Mint, Russia’s oldest money-printing company, still operates within the fortress. Walking around the Powder fort, you’re walking through the heart of St. Petersburg’s history.
