Two dams, rising ten meters high, were erected to harness the waters of the Mithi River, meant to quench the thirst of a growing Bombay. Look closely at the southern end of the lake. Those hillocks you see are the gentle slopes of the Western Ghats, the source of the lake’s lifeblood. Powai Lake spans 6.6 square kilometers, its depth fluctuating between 3 and 12 meters. This expansive body of water, built at a cost of 650,000 INR in 1889, has witnessed a fascinating transformation. Once a vital source of drinking water, it later became a haven for anglers and a sanctuary for the Indian mahaseer.
